Welcome to The Curious Nook!

A place of eccentricities and acceptance

We are gardeners, bakers, apothecaries, and proud parents to 5 cats, 1 giant dog, and an adorable toddler.

This whole endeavor grew out of a simple question that we asked ourselves: ‘how do we want to live?’.

The inexorable demands of ‘normal’ American life (isn’t it odd how so much of a ‘normal’ American life revolves around working to afford said life?) had left us feeling hollow.  We were existing, but not thriving, so we decided we needed to make some changes.  Both of us are irrepressible over thinkers, so we thought, and thought, and while we were still thinking through what we wanted to do, our son came along and really threw things into high gear for us.  We knew we wanted to live more simply and be more connected to the earth, and we wanted to raise him to appreciate the wonder of the natural world around him, but we’d by lying if we said there was any kind of overarching plan when we started.

We just wanted to make our small space into the a good environment for him to grow up in.  A place where we could grow some of our own food, where he could see birds and butterflies and bees, and where all of us could play and relax.  One thing just kind of led to another, and soon we found ourselves turning our lot into a proper urban cottage: building garden beds and pouring over seed catalogues to pick out the produce we wanted to eat, scouring the internet for heritage grains to make into cookies and scones and breads, and filling up cabinets with herbs and oils for scrubs and salves.  And as we did more and more, we just started feeling less and less tied to that life we didn’t want.

And so, while we still haven’t fully answered that all important question, it feels like we are getting closer every day.  We are so happy you could join us at The Curious Nook, and we hope you find something here that inspires you to roll up your sleeves, and do something that reminds you that there was once a simpler time.
